Bali – Luxe Stay: Puri Beji Villas

A lush private pool villa that marries
minimalism with the rustic beauty of Balinese elements.

About an hour’s drive from Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport, past busy roads and winding along rice paddy fields, lies the up-and-coming neighbourhood of Canggu. A quaint mix of surf shops and organic cafes, the laidback Canggu is known to the locals here as Little Australia. I’m in search of a private villa hotel called Puri Beji Villas, run by a beautiful couple from The Netherlands.

With co-owner Hilje Rogaar’s hospitality background and husband Manengu Peters’ keen eye in architecture, they moved to Bali 5 years ago to build their dream island retreat. My car comes to a stop at a small alleyway, with nothing but a nondescript roadsign that says ‘Gg. Beji’ on it. This street, named after a little temple for the water gods across the compound, turns out to be a little hard to find, but therein lies its beauty.

puribeji-entranceDriving into Gg. Beji and towards Puri Beji’s main entrance, it’s hard not to notice the overflowing creeper plants draped over the walls. The rest of the compound follows suit with hanging foliage gently swaying in the wind. It’s wonderfully hidden and perfect for anyone seeking a luxe private retreat, just close enough to the cafes and shops, yet completely peaceful and surrounded by greenery.

As I step through the dreamy doorway into our private villa, I’m in awe of its spaciousness and of course, the star of the villa: the beautiful private pool.

The pool is flecked by two adjacent private bedrooms housed in traditional traditional Balinese/Javanese huts known as joglos or limasans. Thanks to Peters’ childhood years growing up in Sulawesi, he was familiar with Indonesian culture and made sure the essence of it was not lost in the interior decor. They had these joglos built from scratch, featuring distinctively Balinese elements like bamboo and alang alang grass roof tops, a reminder of the natural and slow life.

The pair worked with their best friend Barbara van Vliet for the interior design of the place. To harmonise the rustic, organic beauty of Bali with modern aesthetics, they employed a monochromatic palette of raw concrete, wood and off-white cream throughout the airy, light-filled interiors. The minimalistic beauty of raw concrete is balanced by warm timber and other natural textures such as rattan that can be found on the headboards, dinner chairs or the kitchen lights. What completes the ambience of the place is the tropical plants and cascading vines that feature greatly around both the exteriors and interiors of this island villa. It truly feels like you’ve been invited into someone’s holiday home!

In the mornings, waking up to the view of the pool, I found myself torn between sleeping in or chilling in the gorgeous pool. Regardless your choice, you can count on Puri Beji taking note of your preferences. They pay such a fine attention to detail – waking you up only when you require it and preparing your breakfast according to when you want it. The friendly staff will let you pick your breakfast a day before and prepare it a la minute the next morning. Co-owner Rogaar quips that the breakfast menu is based entirely out of her own personal recipes, her favourite being the Poached Eggs on Multi-grain Bread (from nearby Bali bakery Monsieur Spoon) topped with edamame, avocado and rocket salad. The menu also has Indonesian Classics such as Nasi Goreng Sehat, which has become a top pick amongst the surfers. We were spoilt silly with our breakfast spread delivered to our villa with freshly squeezed juice, coconut and tea. After that, we soaked in the pool, enjoying the serenity before heading out in the late afternoon to explore the rest of Canggu.

There are a total of three villa compounds within the Puri Beji Villas. Each private villa has 4-bedrooms complete with swimming pool. One of the villa compounds also operates as a Bed & Breakfast in cases where guests can book a single room. The B&B also has a yoga bale for guests to do some morning stretches.

For the 4-bedroom villa,  all 4 bedrooms have their own private bathroom. The bathrooms on the ground floor are smaller compared to the ones on the second floor. Do note that the bathroom on the second floor uses a transparent sliding door, has double sinks and a concrete bathtub. Bath amenities include their very own bespoke Puri Beji soap and shampoo (made without palm oil).

Who is it best for?

  • Couples looking for a quiet, luxurious haven to stay in and relax by the pool.
  • Girlfriends who want a beautiful private villa for a relaxing girl’s trip. The second floors also boasts a large living room area with sofa, TV (and DVDs available to watch) so you can be ready for a stay-in movie session.
  • Friends who want a secluded, spacious place to hold a celebration or event. The kitchen area is fully equipped so you can cook in the villa, and there is a communal table & lounge sofa space beside.

Canggu is laidback yet hip, with no incessant honking of taxis on the streets, while tanned and toned bikini babes and boys saunter along the roads carrying surfboards. It has a great mix of shops, cafes and bars.

3 must-go spots in Canggu according to co-owner of Puri Beji Villa, Hilje Rogaar!

  • The Naked Coconut
If there’s anywhere I wish I could keep a secret, it would be The Naked Coconut. A tiny, child-friendly, hip place still standing strong between all the boisterous beach clubs that opened in Canggu, it makes you forget about the madness that’s slowly infecting Canggu and reminds you what Bali is best for: sunsets, cheap Bintang beer, surfing, amazing Balinese dogs and the very kind, caring folks.
  • La Lacalita
For somewhere to kick back a few drinks later in the evening, the beach side bar La Lacalita hits the spot with its good Mexican food and cocktails.
  • Wanderlust Bali
A little ladies boutique selling a range of stylish bikinis, sunglasses and accessories. I bought a Saucha bikini from Wanderlust which I loved very much.
